LB database to PDA???

From: wants2create (wants2create@yahoo.com) | Date: 2004-11-27 07:55:33 UTC-08:00
Hi,
I'd love to be able to copy the clue database (or at least a few states) to my pda so when I am out and have extra time I can search the database for the nearest box. Any suggestions?

Hi from the Budster,

We also would like to know if these PDA's can connect wirelessly while
letterboxing out on the countryside.

Budster,
I know they can connect . . . but I'm in a bad reception area and would like to just download the whole darn thing.

And I'm too cheap to spring for the wireless access. Did you look
into AvantGo, making it a personal page? I'd love to be able to sync
it, and just have it with.

About that PDA stuff, The other day I took an old laptop (thinkpad 1440)
with just about the only thing on it was the xp operating system and into
one of the side slots popped a linksys wireless 11.2g card. Then traveled
to town were they had a hotspot. So then bingo, it hooked up to an
access point by way of , Juno (free service) and did e-mail. Also the
internet was working at (11 megabits/sec) using Internet Explorer. That
was super! .... Now I am not sure if my verizon account that is also
loaded on the hard drive has anything to do with it. There was no
dialup,no moden connection, only wireless . It almost looks like you can
get on line with out an isp account , but I will go back Monday to find
out for sure as to how this is all happening. Anyway the point is, if a
PDA can hook up like this , without a dialup service ,there may be a way
to have a dynamic link to the letterbox site in hot spots. - if thats
true - then I want a PDA **** Budster of the Catskills

I don't always have the foresight to print and take the clues for
all the areas I travel in . . . . just thought it would be easier
for me.

Letterbox - on demand....good idea!

You know, that is a darn good idea... PDAs are just made for
databases and there are a number of databases out there that work on
the palm OS. If a way could be figures out to get a comma delimited
download of the entire database, I'm sure it could be imported into
the Palm...

Wes?? Is a comma delimited export from the database either in it's
entirety or by section or state feasable?? Or an export to another
format??

If you travel with a lap top there's an easy answer. I have the entire west
coast downloaded on my lap top. If I get to an area that I know there's
boxes and I didn't print them before leaving home, I can just pop it open
and look them up. I've been known to hand write all of the pertinent info at
the trail head before heading out.

Hi Madien, It sounds like you figured out how to download portions of
the clues database. I'm fairly new and wondered if you would share
your technique.

I'm working with a Dell Axim . . . pocket pc operating system. This will take word or excel docs but don't know how to access the lbna one or even what type it is.

I have been syncing my pda with Avantgo (where I created custom
channels for the areas where I generally letterbox) since we started
letterboxing almost a year ago. It generally works beautifully. If
you have a pda and regularly hotsync, then you will have up-to-date
clues every time you are out on the road.

Look into Avantgo.com - register and play around with creating custom
channels - it's not hard at all. My recommendations: be sure to allow
your custom channel to follow off-site links (as many clues are
posted this way to LBNA), and be sure to allow your custom channel to
set at a link depth of at least 3. All you do is make sure the custom
channel links to the url that contains the clues you want. Each area
will be a separate custom channel.

Here is what I keep on my pda:
Southern NJ Letterboxes
Northern NJ Letterboxes
NJ Mystery Letterboxes
Eastern Pennsylvania Letterboxes
Pennsylvania Mystery Letterboxes

When we travel to another area, I simply create a new custom channel
for that area and remove it when I come home again.

A small warning about this method, though. Once when we were in the
middle of a series, my pda inexplicably reset and we were not able to
access the clues to the rest of the boxes in the series. Now, I
always read ahead!! You never know when your trusty gadget will throw
you a curve!
